Paddle For Hope 2013 raises $70k for cancer rehab

$70k for breast cancer rehab!

2013 Starboard Paddle For Hope

Thank you to all the heroes who fundraised and donated their time and money to the Starboard Paddle For Hope this year.  A record turnout of 78 relay teams dressed up in pink and battled it out on the Viaduct on 2 November, raising $70k so far for The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

There was an amazing array of costumes and themes, friendly rivalry and mayhem on the water... but every single paddler rose to the challenge and completed the course (some a little faster than others!) so congratulations to all of you, and I hope we see you again in 2014.

There are still a few fundraising activities going on, so if you'd like to help out more

  • bid for a pink mophie iphone 5 juicepack auction on trade me (search for Starboard Paddle For Hope on trademe.co.nz),
  • checkout the online auction of a Peter Jackson & team signed copy of The Hobbit coming up on e-bay - details will be on our facebook page soon.

Taking it worldwide...

Karin whisked me off to Israel three days after the NZ event to attend the first International Starboard Paddle For Hope at Sdot Yam, near Tel Aviv.  With over 1000 people on the beach and 200 individuals racing, it was an incredible event, and an incredible honour to see our very own "Painted Warrior" doing good on the other side of the world.

On the way home we stopped in at Starboard HQ in Thailand to do some product-testing and designed a special edition pink women's board called "Empower Me", with 10% of the proceeds on this board going to the charity.  We can't wait to bring this board to you next year, along with international Paddle For Hope events in Barcelona, Japan, Israel and possibly Norway, Switzerland, Holland, Canada and Hawaii!

Where the money's going...

The money you raised for The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation has been set aside to fund breast cancer rehabilitation, to help restore strength and confidence to people recovering from breast cancer.

Paddle For Hope is now working with cancer rehab expert Lou James from Pinc & Steel Cancer Rehabilitation Trust to develop a stand up paddle rehab program, and are commissioning a clinical study with AUT in March-April 2014.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest from physiotherapists who are interested in stand up paddle instructor training, and also from people who have recently had, or are going to have, breast cancer surgery and would like to know more about the progam and study.  Please email me victoria@supsnz.com for more information.
