Paddle For Hope 2012

On 27 October 2012 the Starboard Paddle For Hope SUP Festival raised $55k toward breast cancer rehabilitation programmes run by the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, and had a lot of fun turning Auckland's Viaduct Harbour pink for a day.

A massive massive thank you to all the people who helped make this event such a wonderful explosion of pink and celebration of life to launch the summer SUP season.  Congratulations to all winners, especially the "REAL" sailors (love your work), Magrette A and B and of course the Starboard Grommets and WaSUP!

And the rest of you can reach your hand over your shoulder and give yourselves a pat on the back for making such a huge effort to be there.  What amazing, thoughtful costumes, what incredible fundraising, and what a memorable day!

Thanks to our amazing sponsors, especially Velvet Espresso, who worked all day pumping out espressos for free (raising $800 for the NZBCF), to Sumo Salad, who not only made those delicious, healthy wraps, but stood and collected donations for them all day long (over $1000).  To Digital Ninja, for tireless work on the cameras and editing suites, to Georgia Schofield, who must have worked 48 hours straight to pull together all the point of view footage and also shoot photos - thank you G.  To Xavier Wallach, who was there from the beginning to the end taking amazing photos, To Water in a Box, for all the free water and for selling the ecousable bottles and manning the hydration zone, to all the incredible volunteers from committee members to dog owners with collection buckets... from board runners to timing officials, from set up to prizegiving to packdown. To Joe Sullivan for driving up for a TVNZ appearance at 8am then mucking in to help all day long (with that big gold medal around his neck), to Willie Beggs, torn between roles as safety operator and Event MC, but doing a fantastic job as both, to Andy Ball and Hayden Smith, our Safety team, to Waterfront Auckland for helping it all run smoothly, to all the wonderful prize donors, goodie bag creators and generous sponsors - Expozay for the gorgeous jandals, Great Barrier Island Bee Co. for dedicating all that time and your generous donation ($500)... to SUPCENTRE for bringing along the SUP trainer and stall to raise money, to the NZ Futsal Whites for the football pitch and the team entry, to the Bouncy Castle guys... to Manu, Butch, and all the top fundraisers on Everyday Hero, to Angie, Katrina and all the SUP Yoga girls, and to everyone I forgot, THANK YOU!

Karin and Jo, Kristin, Clara, Maggie, Catherine, Vanessa, Julie, Natasha, Anita, Sueyean, Jeremy, Paul B and Harry.  You are all angels.

Lets hope that the $55,000 we raised this year, and the program the Paddle For Hope team are working on to share Stand Up Paddling with those recovering from surgery as a form of rehab, really helps those affected by breast cancer to rebuild their strength and confidence.

Thanks for standing up to breast cancer.  See you in 2013!

Namaste, from Victoria Stuart and Karin Horen.
