Akarana Junior SUP Academy

Starboard SUPSNZ are stoked to be back on board as sponsors of the weekly Jetts City Surf Series at Mission Bay, and with the announcement of this season's FREE Teen SUP racing, we’re excited to be helping launch a new Junior SUP Academy at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club. 

Aimed at kids 12 years and up, (Year 8+), the SUP Academy will run in Term 4 on Monday afternoons (4pm-5.30pm) from the Okahu Bay Clubhouse.  The 8-week program will teach kids everything they need to start and progress in SUP racing, including important water safety knowledge, equipment handling, paddle skills, technique drills, race strategy and SUP fitness. After 5 weeks on the program the Akarana Junior team will join Teen SUP racing at Mission Bay.   

The program will cost $150 for the term, and includes RAYC Junior Club Membership, use of SUP equipment, PFDs and instruction with certified PaddleFit Coaches, and special guests.  Big thanks to the Raye Freedman Marine Academy, PaddleOn by Pinc and Steel Cancer Rehabilitation Trust, and the Joyce Fisher Charitable Trust.  Lower income families can apply to the club for scholarships.

What students will learn:

SUP Basics - what is stand up paddling, SUP terminology, how and where to launch a board, getting on and off safely 

Water Safety - tides, wind and weather, maritime safety rules, hazard identification, maritime charts and risk management

Beginner SUP Technique - paddling straight, 180° turns, stopping, falling off and getting on 

Equipment Handling - setting up your gear, how to carry it, wash down and maintenance, board types and purpose (width and length)

Race Skills - different types of racing, rules, race briefings, course maps, race strategy, mark rounding, race starts

Advanced SUP Technique - Cross-bow turns, Pivot turns, moving around on your board, increasing paddle efficiency and speed

Paddle Fitness - fun drills to increase your fitness and speed on the water

 

What to wear:

For training most SUP athletes wear polyester or merino thermal layers with exercise leggings or boardshorts. Kids feel the cold a lot faster, so a wetsuit, spring suit or neoprene layer is ideal. 

All students will be provided with a Starboard watershirt.

Please bring a towel and warm clothes (e.g. polar fleece)

 

 

Pre-requisites:

No SUP experience required, but students must be able to swim a minimum distance of 25m unaided.

Kids with SUP experience who are Under 12yo will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

At the end of the 8-weeks students will receive a Certificate of Participation, and can enrol again for Term One, 2016, to continue race training.
