Paddle For Hope 2013

Aloha, I am Karin Horen, breast cancer survivor and founder of the Starboard Paddle For Hope, presented by Hawaiian Airlines.

I challenge you to enter a team in to this amazing pink festival on water, and to challenge your friends, family, colleagues, and others in your industry or networks to do the same.

The Paddle For Hope is a fun stand up paddle-boarding event.  It’s a four-person teams relay race in Auckland Viaduct where participants in pink costumes each paddle once around a 600m course before handing over their board and paddle to their next team member. Last year there were 200 paddlers, this year we aim to attract 400+ paddlers.

Enter a Team, Fundraise, Paddle and you might even win a trip for two to Hawaii, staying at the luxurious Vive Hotel and Turtle Bay Resort and flying Hawaiian Airlines!

Paddle For Hope is raising funds for The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. The aim is to raise $100,000 to fund a clinical study and stand up paddle rehabilitation program for people who are recovering from breast cancer.

This is a great way to support a fantastic cause while getting your mates engaged in a challenging activity.

Even if you have never paddled before, you can still take part.  Sign up for a Paddle For Hope team SUP lesson at Fergs, SUPCentre or NZBoardstore to get yourself ready for the big day.  Boards will be available to rent at the event on 2 Nov.

Ask your work to sponsor your team! Corporate Team entry is by $1000 donation and includes a SUP Board to use at the event, a free coaching session for your team with NZ Boardstore in Pt Chevalier, and an invitation to attend a training/coaching session in October with our Paddle For Hope Ambassadors. Your sponsor can name the team, put the company logo on your costumes, decorate your board to theme, and get some great exposure on the day. And the entry is a registered charitable donation.

All entries also go in the draw to win the trip to Hawaii.

So enter a team today. For more information, to register your team, or donate to this great cause, visit paddleforhope.co.nz

About Karin Horen

Paddle for Hope is the inspiration of breast cancer survivor & fighter Karin Horen who was just 26 years old when she discovered cancer in her right breast. Luckily, she found it in time, and after a partial mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Karin went back to living life to the fullest, using her voice to encourage others to be aware of their bodies and vigilant about their health.

In January 2013, 14 years after discovering breast cancer for the first time, the beautiful mother of three young daughters found that three suspicious tumours she could feel in her other breast were malignant.  She underwent a skin-sparing mastectomy in March, then started three months of chemotherapy and surgical reconstruction.

As part of her recovery, Karin started stand up paddling (SUP) again.  “I just take it gently, on clear days in the marina.  For me the emotional and holistic benefits of getting out on the water with my friends are just as important as the physical benefits.  Just a few months after the surgery to remove my breast, lymph nodes and tissue from under my arm, my flexibility and strength are returning faster than I could ever have imagined.  SUP helps me feel healthy and normal again.”
