Paddle for Hope 2013

Get on board to fight breast cancer.

The Paddle for Hope is a fun annual festival of Stand Up Paddling created by breast cancer survivor Karin Horen to raise money for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation, to promote the essential role of physical exercise in health, wellbeing and rehabilitation, and to recognise that family and peer support is integral to fighting and beating breast cancer.

In 2012 we turned the sea pink with a beginners SUP Clinic, SUP Yoga and a Teams Relay Race on Sat 27th October in Auckland's Western Viaduct Harbour, raising $55k towards the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation’s rehabilitation programmes for women recovering from breast cancer surgery.

This year, after more than ten years of volunteer work with the Breast Cancer Foundation in NZ, Australia and Israel, Karin began the next step of her journey with breast cancer.    Thinking that back in 1999 she would be free from cancer forever, in 2013 Karin was diagnosed with cancer in the other breast. Karin had a skin sparing mastectomy in March and will have chemotherapy for the next four months. The next step will be radiotherapy and the last stage final reconstruction.

While in 1999 Karin faced this journey on her own, this time round she is being challenged with three little girls, aged 1, 2.5 and 6.  Her will to live and thrive still remains and is maybe even greater.

“No surgery will remove what I have in me and what I have to give, no chemo will erase and no radiotherapy will burn. I am meant to be here and with my passion, experience and love help others.  I could not be more grateful that this time, again, I listened to my body, I knew something was not right and I kept going to the clinic to make sure I got the right answers. And there it was!

My message is as always: Know your body, love and trust yourself. This is the only way."

Let's stand together with Karin this year in her fight against breast cancer!
